5 Best places to visit in Ketchikan Alaska

Ketchikan Gateway Borough, Alaska

Ketchikan, one of Alaska's most Southeastern cities, is the first stop for many cruises on their way to more Northern climes. A stay in Ketchikan itself can be rewarding, however, as the city is the gateway to Misty Fjords National Monument, an area so beautiful, it is known as "The Yosemite of the North." With steep valleys formed by glaciers and lava flows left by volcanic activity, Misty Fjords offers gorgeous views of natural formations, all reflected in the calm waters of Pacific inlets. The city is backed by forested slopes and distinctively shaped Deer Mountain and faces Tongass Narrows, a waterway humming with floatplanes, fishing boats, ferries and barges hauling freight to other Inside Passage ports. Ketchikan also serves as the departure point for side trips to Prince of Wales Island, Annette Island, numerous bear viewing sites and the area’s most impressive attraction. Ketchikan has several attractions worth exploring!!!!

Visiting Places

1. Totem Heritage Centre

The Totem Heritage Center preserves and perpetuates the living artistic traditions of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples that gave rise to the original totem poles on display and provides the opportunity to discover, learn and practice Native arts to inspire cultural understanding. Our knowledgeable staff and interpretive panels help visitors gain a historical context with which to approach contemporary totem poles and the cultural traditions present in our community.

2. The Tongass National Park

The Tongass National Forest is the crown jewel of the National Forest System. The 17 million acres Tongass National Forest makes up over 80 percent of Southeast Alaska (also known as the Inside Passage or Panhandle) and stretches 500 miles between Ketchikan and Yakutat. The Tongass is the still-thumping heart of a rainforest that once stretched uninterrupted from Northern California through Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska.

3. Creek Street

Visited by thousands of visitors every year, historic Creek Street Ketchikan Alaska is one of the most popular things to see in Ketchikan. The antique boardwalk on wooden pilings over Ketchikan Creek is home to restaurants, unique curio shops, the ‘Dolly’s House Museum’ & private dwellings, as well as some of the best salmon viewing areas in Ketchikan. This is a common theme with Ketchikan as you will notice a large percentage of the town was quite literally built ‘over the water’.

4. The Great Alaskan lumberjack show

The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show reflects upon southeast Alaska’s rich logging history and comes to life with thrilling displays of strength and agility. These world champion athletes wearing spiked boots & hard hats compete in 12 athletic events that utilize seven-pound axes, six-foot razor sharp saws, tree climbing gaffs, and soaped up chainsaws.

5. Dolly's house museum-gift shop

Found along the famous Creek Street Boardwalk, Dolly’s House is filled with antiques, old photographs, secret caches, and a video history of Creek Street’s most famous madam, Dolly Arthur. Come relive that exciting era of the 1900’s to the 1950’s. Dolly’s House Museum is locally owned and operated by Ketchikan resident who takes great pride in being able to offer this unique and historic video narrated tour.
