5 Best places to visit in Little Rock Arkansas

Pulaski County, Arkansas

Little Rock, Arkansas sits on the banks of the Arkansas River in Pulaski County, located in the center of the state. And with a population of nearly 200,000 people, it's the largest city in Arkansas and definitely the place to find a good time at a great value. The capital city's namesake – the little rock – is now the center of this beautiful area with interpretive plaques and innovative landscaping. The story of the "little rock" -- Benard de le Harpe, who is believed to have traveled about 50 miles above the present sites of Little Rock and North Little Rock, AR, described the area when writing about his journey. He noted a landmark on the north bank of the Arkansas River, which he referred to as the "French Rock" (now known as "big rock"). The first outcropping of rock along the riverbanks above its mouth on the south bank came to be known as the La Petite Roche -- "Little Rock." The city of Little Rock was incorporated just over 100 years later. The city is full of family friendly, fun things to do; some of the fascinating places to visit are listed below:

Visiting Places

1. Arkansas State Capitol

Anyone coming to Little Rock should not miss the chance to come to the center of the action, the Arkansas State Capitol building, which is also the home of the Arkansas government. The building in itself is a historical gem as it was built in 1899 and used to house a state prison. It is now furnished with marble and ornate limestone and has a signature 24 carat gold leaf cupola which sits at the top, meaning that it can be seen from far away.

2. Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site

The Little Rock Nine were nine African American students who tried to enter an all-white school following the Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education. It was at this high school, still open to students, that racial barriers began to crumble during the highly televised event. Ranger-led tours are free of cost.

3. Historic Arkansas Museum

All things Arkansas are celebrated at this destination that showcases art and artifacts from the state from the past 200 years, including a Knife Gallery highlighting the story behind the bowie knife.

4. Pinnacle Mountain State Park

Just over 15 miles northwest of downtown Little Rock, Pinnacle Mountain stands well over a thousand feet above the surrounding river valley. Two hiking trails that lead to the summit provide unbeatable views, and miles of other multi-use trails wind through the nearly 2,500 acres of state park property. Other popular activities and amenities at this day-use state park include interpretive programs, boat launches, and picnic sites.

5. Museum of Discovery

The Museum of Discovery is the oldest museum in the city of Little Rock and is the place to come if you like history as well as natural science. This is an excellent rainy day activity and perfect if you are traveling with kids and the facility first opened in 1927.
