12 Best places to visit in Houston

Fort Bend County / Harris County / Montgomery County, Texas

In the state where everything’s bigger, Houston looms particularly large. How large? If it were its own country, Houston’s economy would rank 30th in the world. In terms of physical size, a loop around the city on Beltway 8 covers 88 miles. Throw in the world’s largest medical center, rodeo, commercial port, and the Johnson Space Center, and you’ve got the ten-gallon hat version of an American metropolis. Yet for all its size, the Bayou City has plenty of charm, sophistication, and a restaurant scene that’s become one of the hottest in the south. It's by far the country's No. 1 job creator and home to 26 Fortune 500 companies. If you are looking for unique and fun experiences, there is no shortage of things to do in Houston; below are some of places that you can visit at Houston

Visiting Places

1. Space Centre Houston

Space Center Houston, the official visitor center of NASA's Johnson Space Center, is a must-see attraction in Houston. This is a huge complex, where you can walk through the space shuttle replica Independence and the enormous shuttle carrier aircraft it's mounted on. In the visitor center, you can wander inside a replica of America's first space station, Skylab, and touch a rock from the moon. This is also the place to learn about NASA's upcoming missions, which is currently focused on travel to Mars.

2. Houston Zoo

Sheltering over 4,500 animals and 900 species, the Houston Zoo is one of the most visited zoos in the nation. Spend the day strolling through the facility’s beautifully landscaped grounds, or enjoy a more hands-on encounter by scheduling a guided tour. Tour experiences range from feeding a giraffe to shadowing a staff veterinarian for an entire day.

3. The Kemah Boardwalk

Kemah Boardwalk is now Houston’s nearest and largest amusement/entertainment park. Primarily occupied by hotels and restaurants, Kemah Boardwalk is an ideal place to entertain the entire family. Dining options include Landry’s Seafood House, the Cadillac Bar and Saltgrass Steakhouse. Attractions such as a Ferris wheel, train ride, and a carousel are all individually priced.

4. Museum District

The Museum District is one of Houston's greatest cultural attractions, with 19 museums residing in this beautiful area. Eleven of these are free to the public. Some of the highlights include the Museum of Fine Arts, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Children's Museum, the Menil Collection, the Holocaust Museum, and the Contemporary Arts Museum, to name just a few.

5. Buffalo Bayou Park

One of Houston's natural gems, Buffalo Bayou Park is a beautiful 160-acre green space running through the city, with the slow moving waters of Buffalo Bayou as its centerpiece. This urban park is home to walking and biking trails, a dog park, sculptures, and plenty of shady areas to relax. If you want to get active and enjoy some of the great outdoors from the water, rent a kayak, canoe, or stand up paddleboard and enjoy a paddle along the bayou. Rentals are available at the park, and various tours are offered, ranging from one to three hours in length.

6. Walking Tour of Montrose

One of Houston’s most demographically diverse regions, Montrose has become the city’s hub of vintage shopping, live music, and LGBT activism. Restored mansions and bungalows, tree-lined boulevards, and an antique mall make this neighborhood a unique, pedestrian-friendly tourist spot. Stop at Rudyard's, a neighborhood dive bar, for a cold beer and a meal- you might even catch one of their famous comedy shows.

7. Downtown Aquarium

Discover over 400 species of marine life and dine alongside a 150,000-gallon, two-story tank at the Downtown Aquarium. Witness white tigers lounging about, pet a stingray or go on an exhilarating train ride through the Shark Voyage. Wrap up the evening by feasting on seafood entrees, steaks and decadent desserts in the aquarium restaurant.

8. The Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park

The Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park showcases an impressive multi-story sculptural fountain that sees sheets of water cascading over large concrete walls and sculptures. The structure's semi-circular shape towers 64 feet above you and is fronted by a large arch and 46,500 square feet of water. It's an attraction that needs to be seen to truly be appreciated. This 2.77-acre park, covered with dozens of live oaks, is located in Uptown Houston.

9. Museum of Natural Science

The Houston Museum of Natural Science (abbreviated as HMNS) has an amazing collection of mineral specimens, space station models, 60 large skeleton mounts – which include four Tyrannosaurus Rex and three large Quetzalcoatlus – a planetarium, and lots more to occupy the family for the day. The museum’s great popularity is also down to its generous number of special and guest exhibits. Established in 1909, it is now one of the most popular in North America.

10. The Health Museum

For all the budding scientists in the family, or just those who enjoy things of a scientific nature, this is the venue for you. The Health Museum welcomes over 180,000 visitors a year, (over 2.5 million so Far.), partly made up of more than 22,000 schoolchildren as part of their field trip. One reason for this draw is the museum’s excellent interactive health and science educational experiences, which include things like hands on walk through the human body, real organ dissections, and a multitude of ever changing new and exciting exhibits.

11. Cockrell Butterfly Centre

The Cockrell Butterfly Center and Brown Hall of Entomology has a huge variety of species and serves as a teachable moment for kids and anyone interested in bugs, providing entertainment and education for the entire family.

12. The Galleria

When the family feels the need for some serious retail therapy, a visit to The Galleria should certainly do the trick. Modeled after Milan’s stunning Galleria Vittorio Emmanuelle, it is home to over 400 high end stores, wonderful restaurants and food outlets such as Cheesecake factory, Chili’s and White Oaks Kitchen, a full size ice rink, also state of the art children’s play area.
