5 Best Tourist Places in Homer AK

Kenai Peninsula Borough, Alaska

Charming is not a word typically used to describe Alaska, a state known for grizzly bears, ice road truckers, and some of the largest swaths of untamed wilderness in America. But travel about five hours south of Anchorage on the Sterling Highway, and you’ll reach Homer, arguably one of America’s most charming coastal communities. The town’s nickname, “the end of the road,” refers to its location on a four-and-a-half-mile spit that unspools from the highway into the dark waters of Kachemak Bay. The history of Homer is truly fascinating and there are so many facts about Homer to learn about during your visit. Whether you visit Homer (named after Homer Pennock, a gold miner in the 1890s) to hike, to kayak, to eat or to shop, there’s plenty to do in Homer!!!!

Visiting Places

The Homer Spit

The Homer Spit is a long, narrow finger of land jutting 4.5 miles into Kachemak Bay. Dotted with businesses, the area caters to visitors and provides numerous recreation opportunities, from fishing and beachcombing to shopping and boating. With glacier-studded mountains and crystal-clear water surrounding you, the tiny businesses and miles of beaches that make up the Spit also make for one of Homer's most beautiful features.

Kachemak Bay State Park

It’s Alaska’s oldest park and covers about 400,000 acres of glaciers, forest, and oceans. It is common to see seals, sea otters, whales, and porpoise in the water as well as moose, black bear, mountain goats, coyotes, and wolves on land. The air is full of eagles, gyrfalcons, puffins and many, many more birds. The park boasts over 80 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy to difficult.

Salty Dawg Salon

No list of Homer must do’s would be complete without the infamous Salty Dawg Saloon. It has a long and rich history in the community, starting out in 1897 as a post office, railroad station, grocery store, and even a coal mining office. After changing hand and purposes over the years, it officially became the Salty Dawg Saloon in 1957, two years before Alaska was even a state. It remains one of Homer’s most well-recognized landmarks and is worth a visit.

Bishops Beach

Bishop's Beach is a peaceful beach with great views of Kachemak Bay in the town of Homer. Bishop’s Beach is popular among local residents for tide-pooling, dog walking and gathering coal. You’ll see huge tidal changes, lots of sea otters and birds. It’s the beginning of a coastal hiking route that continues 15 miles northwest to Anchor Point.

Pratt Museum

The Pratt Museum is a regional natural history museum located in Homer, Alaska, with exhibits exploring life around Kachemak Bay in South Central Alaska. The museum's mission is to preserve "the stories of the Kachemak Bay region", through "collections, exhibits, and programs in culture, science, and art".
